Health and Welfare

The health and welfare of Dachshunds is of major concern to Australian Breeders.
The Kennel Club UK responded to critics that claim pedigreed dogs are carrying many
disabling diseases by urging breed clubs to review thier standards.
The aim was to ensure that all dogs are fit to function.

The Dachshund Club UK, carried out a review and revised the Dachshund Breed Standard
prioritising health and welfare issues.
Australian Breeders adopted the revised breed standard.

The advent of DNA markers for some common afflictions suffered by various
varieties of Dachshunds has seen breeders of Miniature Long Haired and
Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshunds test their dogs for PRA cord1.

As DNA markers become more available for other conditions
Dachshund breeders will be advised and urged to test.
